Meaningful Comments

Why are comments important?!

Comments are one of the most important aspects of our class blog. It’s what keeps our blog posts active and alive! We love to hear from other students, friends, and family members! We bet you all have interesting things to contribute! You can spark a discussion, share your thoughts, and connect with our class blog! It's empowering to have meaningful interactions with others in the blogging community

We need YOUR help to turn our blog into an interactive community .

Let's talk a bout what makes up a GREAT comment.

Here are some tips adapted by students in Mrs. Yollis' 3rd Grade Class (they're blogging experts!)

Write your comment like a letter—When writing a letter to someone, there are 3 important components... This includes greeting, content, and a closing. Blogs are kind of like letters but more instant! (and they don't need a stamp! :) )

TIP #1- Compliment—It’s nice to open with a specific compliment. If a writer is doing something you absolutely love, TELL THEM! Make sure you are positive and specific so they know to keep doing it in the future!

TIP #2-Adding information—If you also know something about what the writer is talking about, share it with them! Our bloggers love it when our commenters can teach us something we didn't already  know. Leave us some new factual information!

TIP #3-Make a connection—Can you relate to something our blogger has written about? Have you have a similar experience that you want use to know about?! We're happy to read about it!

TIP #4-- End with a question—Is there something you're still wondering about after reading the post? Our bloggers are happy to try and answer your questions. We would appreciate it if you ended your comment with a meaningful question so that we can try to get a conversation going!

TIP #5-- Proofread your work!!-- Look for punctuation, capital letters, and correct spelling! Read over the comment and edit before submitting.

We can evaluate the quality of our blog comments

1 pointer- A general comment that doesn’t add much to the post
Example- Cool post! It was good! Check out my page!

2 pointer- a well thought out comment that adds onto the comment conversation.  The comment can compliment the writer in a specific way, and add new information. You can also make a connection to something the writer has said. Have you had a similar experience that you want to share?  You can end your comment with a related question—then you can develop an interesting conversation.
Example- Brian, I really loved the way you used descriptive words in your post about frogs! As I read your description about their skin, I could really imagine how cold and slimey they were!  Did you know that there are 4,780 different species of frogs in the world?! I learned that when I was in Costa Rica last November. My family and I went on a rainforest tour, we saw so many colorful frogs with crazy patterns on their backs! My tour guide caught us a frog, and let me hold it! It felt slimey, just like the way you described it! How did you choose to write about frogs? Have you ever had a pet frog yourself?!

Our goal is to be creating 2 point comments!

Please follow these tips and guidelines on how to make meaningful comments!

Comments help students realize that they are writing for a global audience. It’s so motivating knowing that people are responding to the hard work we’ve put into our posts!

In order to make sure that students can master the skill of creating meaningful comments, it’s so important to actually taught and reinforced! Students need to understand what a quality comment means! It’s important to invest the time while teaching these commenting skills. This includes teaching, modeling, revising, and encouraging students to write the most high quality comments of their abilities.
