Internet Safety

Let's talk about internet safety! The World Wide Web is a BIG place, that means there are a lot of people out there! Be careful what you share online!

In class we talked about how staying safe online is like staying safe at a mall. Here are the rules you came up with about staying safe online:

  • Never post or share personal information online. This includes friend's personal information.
  • Never meet face-to-face with anyone you only know online.
  • Never share internet passwords with anyone except your parents.
  • Never use your last name online, or the last names of any of your friends.
  • Posts and comments will reviewed by Miss G. before publicly publishing online.

As a teacher, one of my biggest concerns regarding using blogs in the classroom is internet safety. While many students are familiar with the concept of "Stranger Danger", transferring knowledge of strangers in real life to strangers online may not be as automatic. Internet safety is a concept that will be explicitly taught and discussed year round in my classroom. Pernille Ripp, a teacher blogger, shared some clever advice. In her blog, she talks about how she introduced internet safety to her class by having students make connections about why the internet is like the mall. Ripp proposes a scenario, "what would you do to stay safe if your parents dropped your off at the mall?" Students generated ideas of their own safety rules based on the kinds of rules their parents have taught them about staying safe. Having students generate and discuss their own guidelines made this meaningful, and memorable process. This activity helped students connect real life danger with things that can happen on the internet. When I introduce internet safety to my students I will definitely bring up the mall analogy and have students create their own rules.
